Leonardo Martinelli is a filmmaker from Rio de Janeiro. His films mix elements of fiction, documentary, experimental and have been selected at over three hundred film festivals around the world, including Locarno, San Sebastián, BFI London, Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Springs, Cartagena, Biarritz, Gramado and Tiradentes. In Brazil, he was awarded at Festival do Rio, Curta Cinema, Cine PE, Festival de Vitória and others. His films often deal with iconography and post-colonial structures, and how they are present in everyday life in Rio de Janeiro. In doing so, he seeks to think about how a larger and endemic situation in Brazil and Latin America is reflected in the microcosm. For his short films, he was listed as one of the Top 10 New Brazilian Filmmakers by Papo de Cinema. In 2021, his film Fantasma Neon won the Golden Leopard for short film at the Locarno Film Festival. He also holds a Master's in Communication from PUC-Rio. He is currently developing his first feature film.

Leonardo was awarded a fellowship to attend the Locarno Residency 2022 and develop his feature film "Neon Phantom".
