Leon Barbero is a director, screenwriter, and the founder of Joki.
Born in Matão, São Paulo, he studied film at FAAP and got his start directing multi-camera recordings of operas and concerts at the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo.
Leon develops "Genesis," a horror feature, was selected for TFL Extended – Film (Madrid, 2021) and was a FRAPA semifinalist in 2020, and "Perpetual Motion," a sci-fi mystery series co-created with Natália Sellani, was selected for TFL Next – TV Series in 2024. He is the only screenwriter to have reached the ROTA screenwriting festival finals four times.
His short films "Babelon" (2021) and "Through the Uncanny Valley" (2024) have screened at festivals including Curta Cinema, Mostra de Tiradentes, and Phenomena. His third short is now in post-production.
Through Joki, Leon also develops and produces work by creative partners: six shorts released since the company's founding in 2019, four of them by other directors.
Leon was awarded a fellowship to attend the TFL Extended Film 2021.
